Learning from history together

From October 15, 2017 to October 22, 2017, 31 young people aged 16-18 and several adults, including educators and board members from Muslim and Christian communities, traveled to Auschwitz and Krakow. The project was a cooperation project between the SCHORSCH, the Masjid Rahma (Mosque of Mercy), the Centrum Mosque, the African Christian Church and the Evangelical Lutheran parish of St. Georg-Borgfelde. It was thanks to this fact that the young people came from different communities and thus a great treasure trove of personal and cultural backgrounds enriched the trip. The excursion included a 2-day study tour with a workshop at the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial, followed by a tour of the Jewish museum and synagogue. Then the participants had the opportunity to get to know Krakow.

In the course of the trip, the previously unknown young people came together to form a viable working group. Various reflection rounds were planned in which the young people could share their experiences and views with one another. The trip was followed by a public presentation during the democracy conference of the federal project “Live Democracy” on November 28, 2016 with reports, images and video sequences, as well as on the integration advisory board in February 2017. The accompanying committee is currently considering together with the youth forum how the valuable experiences of the trip could be made can be actively carried into the district.
